Need to add diagnosis code for newly developed condition

How do you add a diagnosis code for a recently developed condition and only make it effective as of today forward?  We are finding when adding a diagnosis code today, it autopopulates to all previous invoices/statements (if they need to be re-created, which is not uncommon for our clients or insurance).
