Overview

The Unhealthy Alcohol Use: Screening & Brief Counseling (ASC) measure reports on the screening and counseling provided for unhealthy alcohol use.

The measure tracks the percentage of clients aged 18 or older who were:

  1. Screened for unhealthy alcohol use using a Systematic Screening Method at least once within the last 12 months, and
  2. Received brief counseling if identified as an unhealthy alcohol user.


Eligible Population

Inclusion Criteria
Clients 18 years or older on the date of service during the Measurement Year (MY).
Must have had:

  • Two completed services within the MY, OR
  • One preventive care visit within the MY.


Exclusion Criteria
Clients are excluded from the denominator if they:

  • Have a diagnosis of dementia at any time in their medical history through the end of the MY.
    • Use code M1164 or equivalent from PRO-1161.
  • Have used hospice services at any time during the MY.
    • Use code M1165 or equivalent from PRO-1161.


Data Entry

Clients can be arranged into the following categories:

  • Payer
  • Ethnicity
  • Racial Groups

Submeasures

Submeasure #1: Screening for Unhealthy Alcohol Use

Denominator

All eligible clients as defined above.

Numerator

Clients who were screened using one of the following Systematic Screening Methods:

  • AUDIT Form (PRO-0017)
  • AUDIT-C Assessment in Clinical Quality Documentation
  • AUDIT-C Form (PRO-0120)


Performance Outcomes

Performance Met:

  • Client identified as an unhealthy alcohol user (code G2196) OR
  • Client screened and not identified as an unhealthy alcohol user (code G2197)

Performance Not Met:

  • Client not screened using a Systematic Screening Method (code G2199 or no form present)

 

Submeasure #2: Brief Counseling for Identified Unhealthy Alcohol Users


Denominator

Clients from Submeasure #1 who were identified as unhealthy alcohol users.


Numerator

Clients who received Brief Counseling.

Performance Outcomes

Performance Met:

  • Client received Brief Counseling (code G2200)


Performance Not Met:

  • Client did not receive Brief Counseling and no reason was documented (code G2202)
