Scenario: The nurse dispenses a patient’s medication and gives it to the them. The patient takes their medication and swallows it. Within a few minutes the patient throws up.

What is happening: Medication is dispensed, inventory is reduced, patient takes “some” medication.

What to do: decision must be made by the clinic’s doctor as to whether a re-dose will take place and how much will be re-dispensed. Since the patient has already received their dose for the day the nurse cannot dispense another Clinic dose from the Medication Dispensing Screen. To re-dose medication for a patient, use the Medication Dispensing Admin Screen. Follow the steps below to re-dose medication.

  1. Click the Window drop-down and select the blank space to clear out the window.
  • By clearing the Window, you are preventing the Window from being locked on the Med Dispensing Screen (locked means you can only dispense from that Window on that screen).
  • Clearing the Window would thus allow you to dispense from the Admin screen which is required to dispense a Re-Dose.
  • Click the Admin Button (on the dispensing screen).

  • Click the New button to create a new dose to be dispensed.
  • Bottle- Ensure a bottle is selected (If no bottle is selected try to select a different window and then select the window you are dispensing from).
  • Window- Select the Window to dispense from.
  • Dose (Optional)- Adjust the dose if required (ex. Patient gets 65mg but threw it up, Doc might say re-dose but only give them 30).
  • For Date- Select a For Date.
  • Dispense Type- Select a dispense type.
  • Reason Code- Select a Reason Code for the new dispense.
  • Reason- Enter a reason for the name dispense (example patient vomited).
  • Click the Add button to begin the dispense.
  • Click OK to dispense dose from the dump.
