In order to send prescriptions for controlled substances to a pharmacy electronically, providers must register for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS). For providers, EPCS registration includes verifying identity and prescriber information. Depending on their practice, prescribers will complete this verification process with either Exostar or ID.me. Once verification is complete, prescribers will confirm registration after being granted EPCS prescribing rights by an EPCS administrator at their practice.
EPCS Registration Statuses:
- Nascent: the provider has started the IDP process but has not completed it, likely having not yet completed their webcam appointment to identity-verify.
- Active: the provider is able to send prescriptions for controlled substances so long as they are granted & finalized; they are EPCS registered.
- Suspended: the provider's license subscription has expired but can be manually renewed within 90 days so long as a payment is made to update their license key.
- Dead: the provider's license key is past the 90 day suspension period and has to be deleted from the account and the provider needs to begin the EPCS registration process as a new user.
