MEDICARE 72 HR RULE:
When an InPatient Medicare patient is readmitted within three midnights (Medicare 72 hour rule), the user will receive the message as seen before. The difference is the only option is to select Ok and then CANCEL/F9 the new admit, not allowing the user to continue.
At this time the admit staff, or business office, will remove the discharge date from the prior admit, add the leave of absence (LOA) and the room and board services to the patients AutoGen set up screen. This allows the first admit to bill properly to Medicare with the correct Occurrence and Value codes required.
MEDICARE 24 HOUR RULE:
Medicare also has a 24-hour rule that says if there is an OutPatient charge within 24 hours of an InPatient admit, this charge can not be billed on the OutPatient claim. The system also has a WARNING for this scenario which has not changed. The user would notify the business office so the appropriate procedure can take place, but the new admit can still be created.
