Messaging: Introduction

Messaging encompasses Email, Text and Voice Messaging, Faxing, and Direct Secure Messaging (Email (DSM)).

Each of these avenues serves a different purpose. Since it is a HIPAA violation to send Personal Health Information (PHI) in an unsecured format, Texting and Email is primarily used for appointment reminders, marketing messages, appointment calendars, and patient statements. Fax and Email (DSM) are used whenever PHI is being transmitted. When sending PHI via Fax or Email (DSM) a HIPAA log is automatically updated to ensure that a record is kept of what was sent, when it was sent, and why it was sent.

The Messaging module also has the ability to send automated appointment reminders to those patients who opt in.

There are 4 primary areas where you may send a message.

  • Administration -> Messaging -> Outbound
  • Case Screen
  • Schedule
  • Reports

Inbound faxes and emails may be found under Administration -> Messaging.
